Hi! I’m Dyanne Marte and thank you for reading my about page! Sew Knits is a place to find cool clothing patterns, hard to find fabrics and design/sewing construction help with knits (and wovens). My journey into sewing started at a young age. With ADD, I was socially awkward, misunderstood and quite lonely growing up. It was the 80’s and I loved Vogue Magazine and flipping through the pages. Claude Montana, Escada, and Patrick Kelly pushed me towards a sewing machine! Sewing was patient, kind and nonjudgemental. It also allowed my imagination to run free!
Sewing has been a place of release, acceptance and helped me work through my triumphs and my grief. Sewing has been there when I moved to New York City to start my fashion design career. It’s also been there when I suddenly lost my father to pancreatic cancer. Sewing had been my life for 11 years while running my label called Dennya. It helped me during the day to get through all some tough times. I was hand sewing through my sister’s surgeries for her ruptured brain aneurysm. Sewing is so much more to me than just sewing. It’s my life and I can’t imagine doing anything else!!
I could talk about all of my accomplishments and tell you that I know what I’m talking about when it comes to fashion design. That’s not important. Those things are a result of the passion that I have for sewing. What I can tell you is that if you are curious and want to immerse yourself in sewing and design, you’ve come to the right place! You will get more information about sewing, design, and production. If you are interested in running a successful design business and also enjoy your life, welcome to SewKnits.Com
My Industry Experience
For those of you who do care about credentials, I have a BFA in Fashion from the Savannah College of Art & Design and a graduate degree in Design Management from Pratt Institute. I worked in design and sourcing for NY & Co., J. Crew and Doncaster. I also ghost design for smaller labels resulting in products sold at market. I’ve taught for 10 years in higher education, developing curriculum and running educational programs. In the past, I’ve taught at Bowie State University where I created over 80% of the curriculum for their fashion design concentration, Baltimore City Community College, and the Community College of Baltimore County. I also teach two classes on Craftsy.Com. My brand new class, How to Sew Stretch Fabrics is available through Burda Style Academy. I currently live in Sacramento, California, where I am a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Fashion At American River College.
I do know a few things and that’s great but I’m still continuing my journey. I’m learning new techniques and machinery because the industry is always evolving. What’s more important is that I’m here to help you start or continue your journey!! This is why I started Sew Knits! I’m here to share what I’ve learned and found. All this super fun stuff is here on this site!
